Geo Ham Illustrator (Georges Hamel 1900 - 1972)

We are building this website around the celebrated but nearly forgotten illustrator Geo Ham.

Our ultimate goal is to present all his work here but we fear that reaching that goal will remain an illusion as he has been VERY creative throughout his life.

Vintage 1934 Shell Oil Advertisment by Geo Ham.

This particular one appeared in the July 21st 1934 edition of French magazine "L'Illustration".

The artwork is or course by Geo Ham and depicts what appears to be an Alfa Romeo P3 Grand Prix race car.

The text relays that within one month (June 1st - July 1st), not less than three Grand Prix races were won using Shell motor oil.

The races that are mentioned are:

  • The one-off Grand Prix of Montreux on the 3rd of June, 1934, which was won by Count Carlo Felice Trossi in his Scuderia Ferrari entered Alfa Romeo P3 (hence the Alfa in the image?).
  • The Grand Prix Automobile de Penya-Rhin, held on the 17th of Jun 1934.
This race was also won by a Scuderia Ferrari entered Alfa Romeo P3, this time raced by the illustrous Achille Varzi.
  • The last race mentioned is the 1934 ACF Grand Prix de France, held at Monthlhery race track.
Also this race was won by a Scuderia Ferrari entered Alfa Romeo P3 but this time Frenchman Louis Chiron made to the checkered flag first.

Measures approximately 38 x 28 cm - 15 x 11 inches.
